Preventative Dentistry

Preventative Dentistry

There are few investments that pay off as well as preventative dentistry. Many people have discovered this value only after they have had to invest in expensive treatments to repair the effects of neglect. We educate every patient on this value so they can prevent big problems from ever developing.

Proper Care of Your Teeth

There are two essential parts to preventative dentistry—your at-home regimen and your regularly scheduled visits to our office. Your at-home regimen should include brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft toothbrush. Each brushing should be gentle and last for two full minutes. You should also be flossing once a day at least, preferably before you brush.

These two actions clean the plaque off your teeth. Plaque is the sticky film that develops on your teeth every day, created by bacteria thriving on the moist, nutritious environment of your mouth. Plaque that remains on the teeth hardens into tartar and that’s what eats into the enamel of your teeth and causes cavities.

Regular Dental Checkups

At your routine visits to us, your hygienist will scrub off this tartar during cleaning, followed by a polishing to clean stains and buff away any remaining traces of tartar. We’ll also look for small areas of decay so we can schedule you to get them fully cleaned out before they can turn into bigger problems.

Digital x-rays help us ensure that we have missed no hard-to-see problems or ones that exist below the gum line. Digital x-rays are fast and easy to share with you and they utilize less radiation than x-rays requiring film.

To strengthen your teeth against further problems, your Bloomfield Hills Dental Associates dentist may recommend fluoride treatment or sealants. This is another investment that can reduce the cost of having healthy teeth.

What Kind of Problems Can Be Prevented?

Perhaps you have had a bad toothache or you know someone who has. There are several reasons a tooth can hurt, but one of the main ones is the penetration of decay into the soft, inner portion of the tooth. Saving this tooth will require root canal therapy. Ideally, a crown would then be placed to protect this tooth. Treating that decay while it was minor would have prevented this major problem.

Have you ever noticed that your toothbrush is pink or that you are spitting out a little blood after brushing your teeth? Bleeding gums is a sign of gingivitis or the more serious gum disease, periodontitis. If left untreated, this disease causes bone loss which can lead to the loss of teeth.

In fact, problems with your teeth can affect other parts of your body. If your gums remain infected, the bacteria in the gums can travel to other parts of the body. For some people, this bacteria lodges in and inflames the inner lining of the heart. This is a condition that can easily damage the heart or even become fatal. While that is a worst-case scenario, it does point out the value of keeping your teeth very healthy. Besides, by taking care of your teeth, you also maintain your bright and shiny smile!
