Prosthodontics (Partial and Complete Dentures)

The branch of dentistry concerned with ensuring a person has a complete set of teeth is called prosthodontics. Any method of replacing teeth with dental prostheses (artificial teeth) is part of this specialty. Prosthodontics requires a deep understanding of what makes a beautiful smile—not just the teeth, but also lips, gums and shape of one’s face. When restoring a smile, you have to be able to look at the person’s overall dental condition.

Our Prosthodontic Services

At Bloomfield Hills Dental Associates, we are proud to offer our patients and our community a complete selection of procedures designed to protect or replace teeth. Our services include the following:

These caps for damaged teeth are made from strong porcelain material colored to match your teeth. They can greatly extend the life of a damaged or weakened tooth. A crown is often recommended after root canal therapy, tooth fracture or deep crack.

Also constructed of porcelain which is tinted to match your teeth, a bridge fills the space emptied by one or two missing teeth. Artificial teeth replacing those that were lost are supported and secured by crowns cemented to adjacent teeth.

Partial Dentures

This type of denture can fill in for a number of missing teeth in a row. Artificial, natural-colored teeth are mounted onto flesh-colored acrylic. Wires clip the partial denture to remaining teeth.

Complete Dentures

When all the teeth are missing from the upper or lower jaw, a complete denture can replace them. Materials and techniques for creating dentures are always improving, so now dentures feel more comfortable and look better than ever before.

Dentures offer a variety of benefits, such as quickly restoring one’s smile after teeth are extracted and improving one’s face shape. Better materials mean that they will fit to the shape of one’s gums better than older dentures.

But there are some drawbacks to dentures. Over time, the shape of one’s gums changes and dentures must be relined to fit well. And they need to be replaced every five to eight years.

There is one other drawback to dentures and that is that the stresses of biting and chewing are no longer transmitted directly to the jaw bone by the individual teeth. The bone, which was designed to absorb these stresses, begins to deteriorate and can gradually collapse. When many teeth are missing, the upper and lower jaw bones will change shape, causing a person’s face to age prematurely. Dental implants prevent this deterioration.

Dental implants

This is the most advanced method of providing replacements for missing teeth. Dental implants are permanent replacements, firmly fixed in the jaw on a titanium root (called the fixture). Once the dentist confirms the overall health of your teeth, gums and jaw bone, a small hole is drilled in the jaw in the location of the missing tooth and the fixture is placed. After it has been allowed to heal and bond with the bone, the porcelain crown (the replacement for your tooth) will be mounted to the top of the fixture. You now have a replacement tooth that will look, feel and act just like your natural teeth.

With care, your dental implants can last the rest of your life. Take care of them just like you do your other teeth, with twice-daily brushing, daily flossing and regular visits to our office for cleaning and examinations.
